CATEGORIES OF FIRE

Background

There was a fire outbreak in Dubai just before the 1st of January, 2016. It broke-out near the world's tallest building. I would like to pass my sincere condolences to the families that lost loved ones, and the business men and women who lost valuable possessions. I would also like to describe the categories of fires.

Classes of Fire

There basically 5 classes of fire. These are:
Class A, B, C, D, E, and class K fire.

Class A: This is the type of fire that involves ordinary combustibles. Examples of these type of materials include paper, wood, cloth, plastic and other such materials.
Class B: This is the type of fire that involves combustible and flammable liquids and gasses. This does not include cooking oil. We will discuss kitchen fires in a bit. Class B fires include gases, petroleum products and other such items.
Class C: This is the type of fire that involves energized electrical equipment. More so, if the electrical equipment is de-energized, the class of fire then changes to Class A type of fire. All energized electrical equipment including household electrical appliances and office equipment fall under this category of fire.

Class D: As a child growing in Lagos, Nigeria, I assumed that metals could not burn. On the contrary, all forms of matter can undergo combustion. If the melting point of any material is attained, such a material will burn, and metals are not excluded. Metals too burn. Forms of fire that involve metals are classified as class D fires.
Class K: Kitchen fires are very common. They usually involve cooking oil or flames from the stove or cooking equipment igniting a combustible or flammable material in the kitchen. Kitchen fires are classified as class K fires. Be careful while preparing the festive period delicacies.
