HOW SAFE ARE YOUR SAFETY SHOES

I was doing a routine tour of the occupational work environment where I am a safety leader when I came across a contractor with some awful set of safety shoes.
I stopped him and coaches him on why it is absolutely unacceptable to come to work in such shoes. I also requested for his supervisor and asked him to change the shoes immediately.
Nevertheless, I felt sad about the event because the guys I spoke with assume that the whole PPE concept is just to use one. The importance of whether or not the PPE is wore correctly, is the right spec, and in good condition is lost to them.
The safety community in Nigeria has a lot of work to do still.

COVER EXPOSED HAZARDS

Do not leave mechanical hazards unprotected, especially in occupational work environments.
Mechanical hazards include moving parts on machines or objects that are suspended at height.
As much as possible, use a guard to prevent personnel from reaching into the hazards.

LANYARDS AND SCISSORS LIFTS

Do you know that most mobile scissors lifts have 4 anchorage points for your lanyard?

It is usually located at the bottom edge corners of the scissors lift.

Next time you get on a scissors lift please tie-off your lanyard on the anchorage points and be safe.

POOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS

Background: Poor electrical connections like the one above are very common around us. Moreover many of us never do anything to correct them. I want to believe that it is because we do not understand the magnitude to hazard associated with poor electrical connections.
Reasons why we must avoid poor electrical connections:
1. They can cause electrocution.
2. They can start a fire.
3. They can damage an equipment by causing a short-circuit.

These are just a handful of reasons. There are many more. Please avoid poor electrical connections by all means.

HANDRAILS ARE NOT FOR DECORATIONS

Background

I have seen a lot of people using stairwells and then completely ignore the handrails that are provided on the stairwells. This is unsafe. If you lose your balance or trip on one of the stairs, you may fall and break a very vital part of your body: a bone, your neck, or even your spinal cord. The handrails are not for decorations. Please use them.

Handrail Safety

In most staircases, you will find handrails on either side of the stairwell running along the entire length of the staircase. Contrary to what many people believe, the handrails are not for decoration. They are actually installed to help users stand firm when they trip on lose their balance on a staircase.

Some people have complained to me in the past that they may contact germs from touching the handrails. My answer? Carry a portable hand sanitizer always. The handrails are important, please use them and encourage others to use them too.

TOXIC SMOKE FROM GENERATORS

Background

In my country we never get power supply for more that 8 hours in day. As a result, many people depend petrol or diesel powered generators for power in their homes and offices. However, the smoke from the generators can actually lead to a fatality.

Where do you keep your generator?

It is important to note that generators produce Carbon Monoxide. A toxic gas that can actually kill within minutes of constant exposure. Always run generators outside residential buildings or rooms and spaces that are inhabited. Never run a generator close to a window, especially if you must sleep with the generator on.

If you ever notice that a person has been exposed to carbon monoxide, moved them immediately to an open area where there is oxygen and call for help immediately.

HOW TO USE AN A-LADDER

Background

An A-Ladder is a special kind of ladder that opens-up into an "A" position. It is usually used to perform minor tasks around occupational work areas, offices, and even in the home. I have seen many people using an A-Ladder the wrong way, and will like to explain how an A-Ladder should be used correctly.

The Right Way

The following listed expectations should guide you whenever you want to use a ladder:
1. Inspect the ladder before each use to be sure it is in a good condition
2. Make sure that the ladder is right for the height you want to reach.
3. Ensure that you establish a 3-point contact on the ladder always.
4. Face the ladder while working.
5. Use the correct shoes on ladders to avoid a slip.
6. Ensure that all 4-legs of the ladder are firmly on the ground.
7. Do not use the last 2 rungs on a ladder when working on heights above 1.2m

These should help you stay safe on ladders. Thank you.

CHRISTMAS TREES & FIRE OUTBREAKS

Background

Christmas Trees are becoming very popular with each passing year. Almost every home in my country with almost 200 million people keep Christmas Trees adorned with electrically powered bulbs in their homes between November and February. This risk is, the trees are combustible and a small spark in the electrical connections on the bulbs could start a fire.

Preventing Fires Involving Christmas Trees

The first thing you may want to do is avoid natural christmas trees as mush as possible. However, if you must keep natural christmas trees, remove the lightings wet the christmas trees, check that there are no exposed cables on the lighting system, before replacing it.

Also, you may want to switch off the power supply to the lighting system and other forms of decorations on the Christmas Tree whenever no one is at home. This is ensure that electrical fires do not start while there is no one at home.

If you have questions about how to prevent fires involving christmas trees, I am sure the following people will be glad to answer them. Thank you:

INSPECT YOUR FIRST AID BOX

Background

I just decided to inspect the expiry dates of the items inside the first aid box I have at home and discovered that the Dermazin Ointment I came round for burns has expired. It expired last year, and this is 2016. Happy new year everyone.

Earn free bitcoin

Inspection System

One very important aspect of the Health, Safety, and Environment system is the Inspection Program. It plays one simple but life-saving function: It helps you become assured that when you need your safety system or equipment to work, say for instance in an emergency situation, it will work. If a safety device fails when it is needed, then disaster is inevitable!

Let us take my Dermazin Ointment for example, if I experience a nasty burn in the kitchen while attempting to steal New Year Chicken and need to apply it, it will not be effective because it has expired, was not inspected, and replenished.

Elements of an Inspection System

In order to establish an inspection system, you should consider the following elements:
1. Have a list of the items you want to inspect
2. Have a checklist so you know what to inspect on the items
3. Have a schedule of performing the inspection. Monthly is advised, but you may choose yours.
4. Have a plan to replenished expired items.

HARMATTAN AND FIRES

Background

If you live anywhere in West Africa or have ever visited West Africa between December and February, you will be very familiar with Harmattan. Harmattan is unique for its dry winds. These winds originate from the Sahara and are carried by a North-East trade wind current throughout West Africa between December and February. Apart from the impaired visibility issues associated with Harmattan, it also causes combustible materials to become extremely dry. It does this by dying up all the water contents in combustible materials, especially grasses. This subsequently presents a fire risk.

Preventing Fires Associated with Harmattan

If your live in areas where there are heavy bushes and grasses, you may want to cut the bushes and grasses because small sparks can ignite the dry grasses and bushes and subsequently result to a fire outbreak. It is always better to prevent fires that worry about extinguishing them after they have started.

Similarly, another way to prevent fires associated with Harmattan, you may start a controlled fire to clear the dry bushes and grasses. Notwithstanding, I personally don't recommend this method because it emits carbon monoxide that intoxicates the environment and can lead to a major fire disaster if it is not monitored adequately. Please clear the grasses and bushes around your homes during December and February, you may be saving lives and property by doing this.

CATEGORIES OF FIRE

Background

There was a fire outbreak in Dubai just before the 1st of January, 2016. It broke-out near the world's tallest building. I would like to pass my sincere condolences to the families that lost loved ones, and the business men and women who lost valuable possessions. I would also like to describe the categories of fires.

Classes of Fire

There basically 5 classes of fire. These are:
Class A, B, C, D, E, and class K fire.

Class A: This is the type of fire that involves ordinary combustibles. Examples of these type of materials include paper, wood, cloth, plastic and other such materials.
Class B: This is the type of fire that involves combustible and flammable liquids and gasses. This does not include cooking oil. We will discuss kitchen fires in a bit. Class B fires include gases, petroleum products and other such items.
Class C: This is the type of fire that involves energized electrical equipment. More so, if the electrical equipment is de-energized, the class of fire then changes to Class A type of fire. All energized electrical equipment including household electrical appliances and office equipment fall under this category of fire.

Class D: As a child growing in Lagos, Nigeria, I assumed that metals could not burn. On the contrary, all forms of matter can undergo combustion. If the melting point of any material is attained, such a material will burn, and metals are not excluded. Metals too burn. Forms of fire that involve metals are classified as class D fires.
Class K: Kitchen fires are very common. They usually involve cooking oil or flames from the stove or cooking equipment igniting a combustible or flammable material in the kitchen. Kitchen fires are classified as class K fires. Be careful while preparing the festive period delicacies.
